This week is a gentle one about two things on a lot of families' minds: getting outside, and finding a rhythm for the week. Getting outside. A rug in the shade is a whole new world for a young baby, and tummy time out there gives them a lot more to lift their head for. Crawling on grass and up a gentle slope takes more strength and control than carpet. New walkers get a softer place to wobble, and every bump in the lawn asks their feet, ankles and hips to adjust. For toddlers and preschoolers: a bucket of water and a paintbrush, collecting gumnuts and stones, puddles, a backyard obstacle course, rolling down a grassy hill and ball games. You do not have to be the entertainment, and ten minutes counts. The rhythm of the week. Do some of the morning the night before. Keep the steps of the morning in the same order. Give two choices, not ten. Give the afternoon pick up a soft landing: snack first, questions later. Keep the evening in the same order, dinner, bath, book, bed, even if the clock moves around. And when a day falls apart, start again tomorrow at the same time. Three songs go with the talk. Out The Back Door is a bright sing along about a little one who is outside before their shoes are on. Ten Minutes Of Sky is a gentle ballad about small moments outdoors. Same Time Tomorrow is a cosy song about little rituals and trying again.
