Move With Me!

aderettherapy.com.au

Drag either of Sam's hands above to explore where they can comfortably reach. Notice how the shoulder traces a smooth arc from up high to down by the side — this is active range of motion, and watching Sam move through it is a simple way to see what your child's own reaching practice looks like.

Why Is This Useful?

Learning about how our bodies move is an important part of growing up.

This kind of activity builds proprioception - the ability to know where your body parts are without looking at them. Children who struggle with body awareness might:

  • Bump into things often
  • Have trouble with simple daily tasks such as getting dressed
  • Use too much or too little force when handling objects
  • Find it hard to copy movements in sports or dance
  • Struggle to keep up with peers with activities such as bike-riding, swimming, and running

Try These Challenges

  • Mirror arms - raise both hands up high at the same time
  • Opposite arms - one hand up, one hand down
  • Slow motion - move the hands as slooowly as you can
  • Freeze dance - move the arms around, then freeze! Where did they stop?

These are the same kinds of movement challenges we use in our physiotherapy sessions. If you'd like to learn more about how we help children develop coordination and body awareness, get in touch!
