Why does your child keep bumping into the same doorway?

Why does your child keep bumping into the same doorway? Because knowing where your body is without looking at it is a skill of its own, called proprioception, and some children find it harder than others. The child who clips the same door frame every day is not careless. They have a less clear picture of where their body starts and stops, and that is something you can practise.

This episode lands on the first morning of the NSW spring holidays. The first half is body awareness. Children who find it harder are often the ones called clumsy or uncoordinated. And what you can do about it: pay more attention to what the body is doing, fingers and toes first; slow movements down.

The second half is for the parent who has just brought a sick child home from hospital. Having a child in hospital is difficult. However, sometimes coming home has its own challenges. Here we take a moment to reflect on the challenges and talk through some tips and tricks that may help the mum in that space.

Topics covered: body awareness, proprioception, bilateral coordination, clumsy child, uncoordinated child, child bumps into things, trouble getting dressed, copying movements, developmental coordination disorder, movement games at home, school holiday activities, coming home from hospital, child in hospital, first night home from hospital, parent stress after hospital, siblings of a sick child, settling back in at home, paediatric physiotherapy, Campbelltown, Macarthur, NSW.
